Pole Only Series, Acorn. Round Three Sunday 27th April 2014

Absolutely nothing to say about my match, I could make any number of excuses, but I just wasn't in the mood for fishing this today and it helped confirm that my visits to snake lakes will be few and far between once this series is over.

If you see a mistake on the tables, please let me know.

Avon Angling Short Pole Series, Round One, Trinity Waters, Sunday 20th April 2014

First round of Tony Rixon's short pole series, all of which are on Trinity Waters Woodland Lake.  As it was a 10.00 draw, I toyed with the idea of making breakfast at home, but decided on one of Shipham's finest and very nice it was too.

24 booked on the lake and as there was a cold wind blowing into the car park bank, I did think a draw on the far bank would be the best option, so positioned myself at the front of the draw queue and was reasonably happy to see peg 7, on the far bank, written on the draw ticket.

For company I had Paul Elmes on peg 6 and ex team mate from my Clevedon Veals days, Steve Seager on 8, so it would be a day with some chat and banter, especially as Tony Rixon pitched up on peg 9.  I had a plan in my mind, that was to start on soft pellet, with a rig to fish banded pellet on the same line if nuisance fish became a problem.  The MW Pinger that I had set up to fish banded pellet on Friday, was already at the exact depth, no need to adjust at all, so was the MW diamond for meat at 2+2 sections.  I set up another MW diamond to fish the soft pellet and a NG margin float for down the edge, I found the shallowest area was 4', a bit too deep for my planned groundbait and dead maggot attack down the edge.

I started at the full length of pole straight in front, feeding some groundbait with micro's and 6mm pellet in, the thought behind this to stop the fish coming up in the water, which they do very readily in  this lake giving liners and foul hookers.  It didn't take too long to get a bite on soft pellet and a 3lb carp came to the net, I had another one nearer 5lb, before I started missing bites, so I switched to banded pellet.  This proved a waste of time, as the bites stopped completely, I switched back to a soft pellet and had a decent skimmer, it seems as if skimmers were the culprits of the missed bites.  They were responding to the groundbait, but the bites were tiny dips of the float.  Putting a piece of meat on over the groundbait, resulted in the same missed bites, frustrating.

By now, Steve Seager had landed 3 or 4 big fish on paste amd was well in front of me, Paul on peg 6 was now catching a fish a chuck down the edge and I was falling way behind.  Tony had landed 4 foulers and was getting some banter from Steve.  I needed to change something or I was going to seriously embarrassed, so I made up some paste and set up a rig to fish paste over the groundbait.  Two missed bites in the first two drop ins and the third saw a fish in the net, another followed, but this line seemed to be dying, as the liners and indications had stopped.

I had fed the 2+2 line with meat, from the start, but it didn't produce a single bite, no indicaton at all, so my last hope was the margin. I had fed a big handful of dead maggot and some meat/pellet mixed in with it and had a burst of fish on meat, before missing bites, which I am sure were small fish.  A switch to double corn and feeding corn brought a couple more fish, including the biggest of the day.  This line also died off, so I refed it and went back on the paste, that gave me one more fish, but the last hour was spent swapping between the two and wondering why I couldn't catch, don't think I did anything drastically wrong, as I wasn't alone in the peg not building towards the end.

I had about 75lb on my clicker, with 5 or 6lb of skimmers. I knew Paul Elmes had well beaten me and I thought it would be close between me and Steve as he had some big fish.  The scales confirmed Paul's bettering of my weight and a match win for him, I had managed 85.15, which was enough for 3rd on the day.

Trinity Waters Good Friday Open, 18th April 2014

The usual cheery welcome from Misha and Tom, with the added bonus of an easter egg for each angler, a nice thought and typical of the friendliness of this family run fishery.

A 20 peg sell out, leaves a bit of room for most anglers so I wasn't to bothered where I drew, but certainly wasn't upset when peg 32 came out of the draw box.  Next peg to my left was peg 2, so a bit of room and the other side, 31 was the golden peg.

This match was a pole only, so that saves taking wagglers.  Sticking with my intention to keep it simple, my bait tray consisted of 4 tubs, 6mm & 8mm meat and hard pellet.  I intended to try and kick start the long pellet swim with a couple of balls of groundbait, some Marukyu 131 I had left over from my trip to Barston.  So a 14m pellet line, a 5m meat line and a margin rig, as I had time I also set up a shallow rig with a NG float I hadn't tried before, that Nick Gilbert had sent me as a trial. This still remains unchristened, as I only had roach bites shallow and didn't hook one.

The meat line was virtually as deep as the long line, so a 0.4g MW diamond for that and a 0.5 MW Pinger for the pellet line, an NG margin float on 0.20 to 0.16 with a 16 B911 completed rhe set up.  Starting on the long line with a banded pellet over the groundbait, pinging a few pellets at the float, saw a couple of decent skimmers come to the net, but a distinct lack of carp.  The lake seemed to be fishing quite hard, but it had been a cold night and the chilly wind was swapping direction continually.

I stayed put on the long line with hard pellet for over an hour, still without a carp to show for it, so a look on the 5m meat line was in order.  This produced a couple of skimmers, but seemed to be typical of the day, when a new line, or a rested line would produce one or possibly two fish and then appear to be devoid of fish again.

With half the match gone and one 5lb carp and about 8lb of skimmers in the net, I noticed some swirls and tails in one of the margins I had been feeding.  This was the margin closest to me, to my left, putting a bait in amongst the obvious signs of fish, did nothing, except make the fish disappear quicker than my misses can spend a paycheck.  I had also been feeding a margin into the bay of peg 33, this produced 3 quick carp, but this then also slowed down and I had to sit and wait for a bite.  This was frustrating, as I could see Kev Perry on peg 3 starting to catch consistently, with a larger stamp of fish.

I only managed one fish in the last half hour, they just weren't confident to stay in the margins as their companions got caught.  I had clicked 58lb and thought I had 8lb skimmers, which I knew wouldn't beat Kev and a lot of the rest of the lake was hidden from view by a bush.

I caught up with the scales to see Kev had weighed 79lb, there was an 81lb and the first weigh in I witnessed was peg23 which put 116lb on the scales. I knew those three had me beaten and so the scales confirmed, my 60.08 of carp and 8.15 of skimmers giving me fourth place and a section win.

Pole Series Round Two, Acorn. Sunday 12th April 2014

The weathermen had promised a day with no rain and little wind and for once they seemed to have it bang on.  I decided to wait and take the last ticket in the draw tub, not sure that was my best decision, as it left me peg 7, not the strongest peg in the section.

I wanted to give myself several options, so two rigs for tight across, one for banded pellet, one for maggot, a rig to fish over groundbait with worm or dead maggot, a margin rig and finally, as there is a flat plateau in front of peg 8 (which isn't pegged), a paste rig.

There were signs of fish moving across, I went straight over and had 3 fish for about 6lb in the first half an hour, which was slow, but the next half hour was even slower, not a bite.  With an hour gone I went down to peg 8 on paste and had 4 fish up to 6lb, this line then died as sudden and unresuscitationable as the far bank.  I had been feeding a margin line and saw a fishes tail over the feed, dropping in I had a sharp bite and another 4lb fish was netted.

Nothing else to write about, I spent the last 3 hours trying every line, bait and various hook and line sizes to no avail, I didn't have another bite, not even on single maggot.  My 'first half fish' went 30.11 for a dismal 7th in section - a day to forget - although I did sneak through the knockout.

The venue is very coloured, I assume stirred up by fish, but they seem very reluctant to feed confidently in many pegs, maybe a couple more degrees increase in the water temp will help, I hope so!!
