My turn to fish Acorn this round, Paddock was fully booked so it was onto the newly redesigned Match Lake, which has had many carp removed and plenty of skimmers added. We pegged it out in the reverse of the old permanent pegs, with A1 being at the top end and A10 was the old peg 2. I drew A7 which actually turned out to be the old peg 7, I would rather have had an end peg, but its a bit of a suck it and see today as the lake hasn't been match fished since the changes.
A nice coating of ice on the car made me glad that I had pinkies in the bait bag, I set up a Malman Winter Wire 4x10 with a .08 hooklength and a 20 gamma black hook. A Carpa Chimp with a 0.12 and a 18 63.13 at the same depth just in case they went mad..... and a rig for up the far shelf completed my rigs, this was a J range dibber with a 0.12 hooklength and a 16 63.13.
I found an area of the peg that was at least 6" deeper than the rest, this was at 9m at 2 o'clock, so this was where I targetted the skimmers, initially feeding some groundbait, micros and pinkies. I found a nice level area on the far shelf and fed this with caster. I didn't have to wait too long before the float dipped and a small carp graced the net, then another - I thought they'd been taken out!!! Next was a skimmer around the 6 -8oz mark and I managed to keep them coming one every 5 - 10 minutes for a couple of hours, by using a pole pot to add micros and pinkies every put in,
The skimmer line then went quiet, so I refed the line with groundbait and had a look up the shelf with double maggot, that produced a small rudd, a 12oz perch and a carp, that was it for up the shelf, every other look over there produced no so much as a twitch of the float. Back over the groundbait and 2 quick skimmers, then back to waiting for a bite, topping up the groundbait, or potting in some micros and maggot seemed to bring a fish or 2, but then the wait after was longer than a steady drip of bait via the topkit pot.
Going into the last hour I expected to put a few more fish in the net, maybe even a bonus from ther far shelf, it proved hard going, I didn't have a bite from 15.30 until 16.25, when I had 2 skimmers in 2 put ins just before the all out at 16.30. I could see that Sam Johnson on A10 had a really good last hour from the end margin and that proved to be my downfall, as he beat me for the silvers by 14oz, but it was an enjoyable days fishing, my 4 carp going 4.12 and the silvers 24.08. Dave Wride won the lake by a convincing margin, with 65.06 from end peg A1.

Acorn Open, Monday 9th April
I fished Friday, but just couldn't be arsed to write about it, Trinity Waters, I drew peg 9 which I wasn't unhappy with, but my match was a waste of a day, I foul hooked 1 small tench and 1 small carp, the only thing I hooked fair and square in the mouth was a 12oz eel.
Today was my first visit to Acorn Paddock Lake since May 2010 - it was a toss up between this or watching City v Coventry, I booked into this before I saw the wet weather forecast..... Still, the breakfast has improved since the early days and at £5.50 for the large one, it wasn't too bad at all.
Peg 7 was to be my home for 6 hours, having been advised by those with local knowledge that I'd need to carch from the shelf in front of peg 8 (handily vacant) if I was to stand a chance of beating peg 5 or 6. So a 4x12 Carpa Chimp was set up to fish this very flat plateau that extends a few feet from the margin of peg 8. I also set up a rig to fish meat tight across and another Chimp (4x14) to fish at the bottom of the far shelf for skimmers.
My silvers quest started OK, with a tench and a couple of skimmers, then I hooked a carp which promptly saw the skimmers do a disappearing act. By this time I was becoming a spectator, watching Glen Bailey on peg 5 catching well and Rich Heatly catching - a smaller stamp of carp - from his far shelf next to the bridge. I persevered with the silvers quest, but after two hours gave up, as the odd carp that I hooked and landed, scared the skimmers off for periods of up to an hour. It was the dilema of if I fed it attracted carp, but not in sufficient numbers to catch consistently or if I laid of the feed I could get the skimmers back, but how do you keep them coming without feeding?
I hooked a big carp that came off and as it did the float exploded, so up the bank with that top kit and a try with banded pellet, that produced my one and only fish from the plateau of peg 8 and I had one more over against the far bank, but I wasn't getting liners or foulers, they seemed content to stay in peg 5 and by the bridges.
I topped up the skimmer line with 2 balls of groundbait and had a little run of fish, but again a carp moved in and that was the end of the skimmer action, as this one ploughed through the swim, before taking me out into open water in front of 8 and snapping the hooklength.
I ended the day with 29lb odd of carp and 11lb 12 of silvers, which I believe was one out of the silvers money, I don't think there were enough carp in the peg to compete with the carp weights (I only had 6 or 7 for the 29lb), so they were big (for the venue) carp pushing out the silvers. In contrast Silvers winner Steve Mayo didn't weigh a single carp.
Not fishing until next Sunday now and I reckon it will take that long to dry my kit out.

Pole Only Series 2012
Round two of the series today, after a week of chopping up meat I decided on a change and aimed for a pellet attack. Plenty of worm and some caster also in the bag, all left over from Whiteacres. I knew I was in C section, pegs 23 - 39 on Plantation. Peg 32 was my home for the day - not an ideal draw, but I felt there was enough water to enable a few fish to be caught.
I set up 4 rigs, a shallow rig, as the fish do come up in the water early in the year on this venue, a rig to fish hard pellet on the deck, another to fish Devils Spawn and one for worm and caster. I started at 14m towards the island and foul hooked 5 fish in 5 put ins, so switched to a shallow rig, that produced nothing. Back on the deck and I managed a couple of skimmers and a carp, but the liners and foulers were a problem.
I dumped 2/3 of a large cup of 6 & 8mm pellets in to try and get the fish down, that proved to be a big mistake, the indications stopped - but so did the proper bites! Onto the short caster line and that produced a reasonbabale hybrid, but little else, the water was green and the bright green algae bloom kicked up by a hooked fish was worrying this early in the year.
I ended up going 19m towards the island to get another 3 carp, but finished with a dismal 29lb 10oz, another 6lb would have given me 3 more points, but I would have need another 43lb to get another point, once again I was at the end of the lake with low weights, I didn't help by dumping the bait in, but it would be nice to draw a favoured peg.........

Bait Tech Festival 2012
Today saw me on 31, Twin Oaks, I'd decided on a line at 14m for worm and caster, a short line for meat and tight to the far bank with a waggler and straight lead. I also set up a margin rig as both margins looked tempting and one rig did for both.
I clipped up the waggler and lead rod, plumbed up the pole rigs and was ready for the start, I had an F1 on the second chuck with the straight lead and then one of those inexplicible cock ups, the lead hit the far bank and I lost the lot. I don't like leaving tackle on the bank, but there wasn't much I could do about it.
Switching to the waggler I had a carp tight across, then heard a commotion as a duck had picked up my lost line and then tangled that up with the waggler set up of Lewis Walker on peg 29, he managed to get the duck in and I went down to his peg and cut all the line off it - it flew away quite safely.
Sad to say that was the most exciting part of the day, the promising looking margins only producing one fish from each side, a few skimmers on the pole and a couple of carp across ensured that my dismal performance continued.
Onto the last day and I was looking forward to Porth, I was confident that I could put in a better showing than on the lakes dominated by F1's. 82 out of the drawbag, so a trip on the boat and it was dropping off at peg 80, so a short walk. I was intending to only take a couple of feeder rods, but I did slip a waggler rod into the rod bag.
I set up two feeder rods, one at 25 turns and one at 60 turns, the 60 turns rod didn't get touched again, so no more about that. I added the waggler rod to the set up, with a large bodied Drake waggler. Hooklengths were 0.10 flurocarbon and size 16 hooks on both rods used.
Starting on the feeder with caster & worm, I had indications and a couple of fish early on, after an hour of bites and a few small skimmers I tried the waggler and had 3 fish including a chunky 4oz roach, in 3 put ins. Then the line caught under the plastic plug on top of the platform leg and broke, I retackled up, but couldn't replicate the bite a chuck of the first 3 casts.
Back on the tip and I kept fish coming, the 2 best fish, skimmers of about 12oz and 1lb, both taken by pike, at 4 o'clock another disaster - the fine glass tip of my drennan rod snapped, so I had to retackle up with another tip section. I kept catching to the end and was happy that I'd fished a much better match than the previous 3 days. I was second to weigh in in the section and was winning the section with 5lb 10oz until end peg 89 weighed 6lb odd. Someone said,"that end peg has won the section every time I've been here!!"
So some redemption on the last day, the festival was a massive learning curve. I now know how little I understand meat fishing, F1 fishing and that good up to date info is crucial to success in these festivals. The bait limit meant I was worrying about taking the full amount, which on every day was too much.
I reckon I'll go again, but next time with full preperation and more prepared to ask questions.

Bait Tech Festival, Whiteacres, 2012
Third day and I drew Jenny's, peg 5. The first 2 days saw pegs 8 and 9 first and second in the section, as Des Shipp drew 8, I had little doubt it would win the section for the third day. 40lb had come off my peg the day before, so I at least wanted to beat that.
I have realised in a couple of days how little I understand about F1 fishing and the intracacies of meat up in the water. The bait limits have screwed my brain, it has resulted in me taking more bait than I need, my resolve to keep things simple also being tested, with advice coming from all angles, much of which I had taken on board and then found it to be wrong or I just couldn't put it into practice.
I arrived at the peg to see the sun beating down on a flat calm lake, never a good sign, I set up a straight lead to fish meat to the island, a feeder to fish short of the island and a pellet waggler to fish meat, if the wind allowed. 3 pole rigs graced the roost, a Carpa Chimp to fish at 14m with worm, a Malman float whose name eludes me to fish 5m and a Preston something to fish shallow. With the advice from Faitheey that worm & caster would be the way to go I mainly had that in my plan. Pepperami king, Paul Nichols was on peg 9, but as I have only ever managed to catch one fish on it I didn't have any.
I carefully clipped up the lead rod to fish to the point of the island and plumbed up the pole rigs, although therte was only an inch or two difference in the lines. On the all in I cupped in chopped worm and caster at 14 & 5m, then sent the lead to the clip, with a piece of 8mm meat on. That instantly found some underwater snag (dead rushes) that weren't apparent when clipping up, snapping the main line. That was that rod chucked up the bank after 5 minutes, I then tried the cage feeder with groundbait in for the F1's, I managed 1 in half an hour.
Onto the 14m pole line and a slow start on the worm, a few small skimmers were all I had to show for it, before a small tench joined them. I tried the 5m line and had 3 skimmers then nothing, back to 14m and the fish came slowly, very slowly, I was potting in (kinder pot) chopped worm & caster and the peg was fizzing like mad, but the bites were few and far between. I tried upping the groundbait content of the pot, increasing the worm, adding a few grains of corn,all of which didn't speed up the wait for bites.
I started pinging a few 8mm bits of meat to the island, as I knew I was getting well behind, I was looking for a swirl or some sign that carp were there, I saw some dark shapes with just over an hour to go and picked up the waggler rod. Six carp came in the last hour, with 2 lost, foul hookers I suspect. I knew Des Shipp had won the section, he stayed on the feeder all day and weighed in 97lb odd of F1's, my weight of 50lb odd beat yesterdays weight off the peg and was a miserable halfway or so in the section, the six carp tight to the island saving another embarrasing result.
Back to the caravan for a shower before another session in the bar, which as my festival dreams are now nightmares, it will make no odds, roll on Porth on Friday!!

Bait Tech Festival, Whiteacres 2012
My first visit to Whiteacres, the Bait Tech festival, having
just moved the Friday before was used to find my tackle, rather than any actual
preparation, although I did check all the elastics and change a couple that
were starting to rot.
Travelled down on Saturday morning, meeting up with Paul
Faiers, Glenn ‘Faitheey’ Calvert and
Chips, Pauls Father-in-law . We meet at Hilltops, had a decent enough breakfast
and got on the road, the journey was nice and straight forward, we arrived at
Whiteacres just as the Spurs game kicked off . Faierzy being a Spurs fan went
straight to the bar to watch it and we intended to then go and look round then
the lakes. As anyone who knows us, will suspect, it didn’t go to plan and we
were still in the bar at 23.30 – not the wisest move.
Thankfully Sunday wasn’t the first day, so the resulting
hangover didn’t infringe on the serious fishing. It took us a while to get
going and we did get to Pollawyn for a pleasure session on Sunday afternoon, I
fished peg 421 and had a pleasant afternoon catching skimmers, tench and bream
to 5lb on corn over groundbait. A much quieter evening in the bar, although we
did need a restorative cordial or two, especially to help us get over the
brutal rape and gangbang we witnessed on Sunday afternoon, one single duck
being ravaged by a long line of rampant mallards.
I was drawn in E section, so Monday was Bolingey day, peg 9
was stuck to my hand in the drawbag, not the best I was informed. I set up a
lead rod, a waggler and a couple of pole rigs to fish meat. At the all in most
anglers chucked a lead or feeder towards the island, I followed suit and 40
minutes later that went up the bank, as every had had a fish or two (and some 6
or 7), whilst I hadn’t had as much as a liner.
The pole line proved to be equally as fruitless and I was now 8 or 10
fish behind some of the pegs further round the lake.
I could see some fish up in the water, the waggler was difficult to control, but was the only
method I could get a bite on, I had a couple of decent carp, then they seemed
to disappear and I managed some decent sized F1’s by casting tight to the
island. Reverting back to the lead brought another couple of fish on 8mm meat,
but I just couldn’t catch at a rate or size, that the guys further up the lake,
thus rendering my first day section challenge a disaster.
The pole line stayed seemingly devoid of fish until 4
o’clock, when a lone carp took the meat on the 5m line, it proved to be the
only bite of the day on the pole. I
managed 70lb, but the lake was won with 240lb (although it was estimated the
winner had in excess of 300lb, but only
had 4 nets). I managed to beat the pegs either side, but we were at the wrong
end of the lake today, had the wind been more favourable I might have cracked
the ton though.
Tuesday saw me on Pollawyn, after a quieter night in the bar
Monday, although the Mallard porn show was fast becoming one of the features
worked into conversations, as Faitheey spent his 3rd on Pollawyn
money on beer. I drew peg 17, 40lb had come
off it on Monday, but it was well beaten either side. The plan was to fish 6mm
meat, starting on the bottom, then coming up as the fish come up, I actually
followed the plan I had in my head, starting on the feeder across, whilst the
meat lines settled. Most anglers along my bank managed a carp or two on the
feeder, but I didn’t. In fact I didn’t
manage a bite in the first 40 minutes, not good in a 5 hour match.
Switching to the pole line at 14m I had a couple of skimmers
on the 6mm meat before once again becoming
biteless. I was once again
watching anglers further along the bank catching whilst I struggled. I swapped
between the 5m line and the 14m line and took a very occasional fish.
I fed a line with chopped
worm and caster, this produced 3 skimmers and I thought I’d sussed it, but that was the end of the
action over that line. Had it not been a requisite of the festival to stay and
weigh in, I wouldn’t have been at my peg come the end. I reckoned I had about
10lb of skimmers with 15 minutes to go and my one and only carp was hooked with
15 mins to go, a 10lb ghostie doubled my weight, but still couldn’t lift my
pathetic weight off the bottom of the section. Chatting to those that did catch
carp and more skimmers than me, I’m not sure what it was I did wrong – if
anything too much – this has been a very frustrating festival so far, hopefully
tomorrow will bring a change of fortunes.

Pole Only Series, Sunday 26th February 2012
The start of the series today, the draw was at Acorn, so over breakfast, Paul and myself finalised a few details and got the draw underway. There was a full house of 30, so the planned 1 x section of 10 on Acorn and 2 x sections of 10 on Plantation.
I got Mike Owens to draw for me, that'll be the last time ever, as he pulled me peg 1 on Plantation, I did fancy Plantation, but not peg 1 after my blank on there a couple of weeks ago. Contrastingly, Nick Harvey managed to be sat on peg 8, for the 3rd time in 4 matches, I know the draw gods have never been particularly kind to me, but I must have really upset them lately!!
I set up 3 rigs, a Sensas Auchy on 0.12 with a 0.10 hooklength and a size 20 hook. A Carpa Chimp on 0.14 to 0.12 and a 18 808 and a MW short diamond for the margins - which did not produce a single bite, so no more about them.
The water didn't have much colour in it and with the overnight frost I was no more confident when I sat looking at the peg, than I was when Mike handed it to me. I felt there was little point in fishing short, so fed a line at 14.5m and also the margin at that distance. I fed a few micros, with caster and dead maggot, it took 15 minutes to get a bite, which was a tiny roach, then a couple of skimmers, so I switched to 4mm Devils Spawn and instead of the expected skimmers, the small roach seemed to take a liking for them. Then a carp muscled in on the act and that was the end of the action, the middle 4 hours of the match saw me land about 8oz of fish.
Last hour and the skimmers turned up, I had a few and 1 more carp, all on the Devils Spawn. In the last 20 minutes I foul hooked 2 carp that were right up in the water, true to the way my day was going, they both shed the hook. So a crappy day and to cap it off, I lost a brand new (first day out) Zippo handwarmer and I was listening to the Cup Final on my walkman, I took the earphones out whilst I called the all out and they dropped through my footplate into the lake and stopped working. A nice expensive day and the result will need to be dropped, so no more room for bad draws or poor angling.
No overall payouts on this series, just top two in the section and top two silvers per section. Weights in Kilos.

Trinity Waters Open, Sunday 19th February 2012
Misha has planned a few opens this year and after my last two visits, which haven't been at all successful, I wanted to get back down to Trinity and make amends. I have two rig trays, full of floats for use at Trinity, from 0.75 up to 3g, well today I had my trolley wheels, but my Trinity rigs were in the garage 35 miles away. The wind was blowing hard up the lake into the corner peg 22. It was going to be hard to present a bait in the worst affected pegs.
Of course, because my floats were at home, I drew 26, right in the teeth of the wind, from me up to the corner (which Misha drew) there was a Huntspill-esque chop on the lake. Searching around in my box I found a couple of MW diamonds that were about 1g, I made one up on 0.14 with a 0.12 hooklength and a 16 63.13. I set up a waggler and because the wind was so bad, a straight lead. I cupped in a few micros and dead reds at 12m on the all-in, that was as far as I dare go, but it proved to be a waste of time, as I couldn't hold the rig still, the presentation was dreadful.
The waggler, even with 2' of line of the bottom moved through at a pace so quick, it wouldn't fool a suicidal motherless minnow. I fed some caster as far as I could with the catty and tried the straight lead over it, whilst that was out, I set up another MW diamond to fish at 5-6m at the bottom of the shelf, to try and catch roach, as I could see how tough it was fishing, with everyone struggling for a bite. I fed pinkies at 5m and even that didn't result in a bite.
After a couple of hours, I had one roach (very small) and was feeling a bit chilly in the wind, so I went for a walk down to see Andy Hembrow and Kev Perry, who were getting odd fish, but the contrast in the wind was amazing, they were fishing 14m+ easily. As a positive move I went into the cabin and bought a cage feeder, a big one. I went back and made up some groundbait, then chucked the big feedr out 1/2 a dozen times, before switching back to the straight lead, I also cupped 4 big balls in on the 12m line.
The tip went round and my first skimmer was netted, then another, then a roach, next the tip wrapped sharply round and a carp was the culprit, very carefully played and thankfully netted. One more small skimmer and then the bites dried up, but the wind was finally dropping the chop was reduced to a ripple and I dropped the pole rig over the groundbait. The presentation was Ok and a couple more skimmers and a bream came to the net, I topped up the groudbait and then lost another big skimmer, that seemed to spook them, as I had no more skimmers, but added a couple of 4oz roach to the net.
After 2 hours I was nearly ready to go home, but the groundbait approach changed my fortunes and my 12.01 was enough to win, thats the lowest weight to win any match I've fished here. In fact there were only 2 carp caught, mine and Ian Walvin on peg 7 had one. Still it was nice to get back to winning ways at Trinity. I caught all my fish on a white maggot tipped with a fluro pinkie over groundbait.

Back to the scene of last weeks disasterous blank, surely I'd draw a form peg today. The day got off to a bad start when I realised that my trolley wheels were still in the garage, the upheaval of packing everything up ready to move contributing to the chaos in the garage.
I wasn't too happy when peg 33 stuck to my hand, its a decent silvers peg usually, but after last weeks match and cold weather, I wasn't convinced that a bay would be any good today. A simple choice of rigs saw me set up a Sensas Auchy for close in, and a couple of carpa chimps one with 0.10 and a 18 and one with 0.14 and a 16 63.13. There were a few bubbles in the bay, so I was hopeful that it was fish. I fed two lines at 14m, one at about 11 o'clock this is the usual place to catch skimmers, today I also fed a line at 2 o'clock towards the open water of the main lake.
Devils Spawn usually sort out the skimmers, so the 11 o'clock line was fed with micros, the 2 o'clock line with groundbait and dead reds and a close in line with caster. It was a slow start, with the usual skimmer line not producing a bite, the 2 o'clock line did produce a couple of fish, but I doubted that it was going to be a day for hectic sport. The 11 o'clock line produced an unseasonal tench and a carp to the Devils Spawn, but the skimmers that are usually the mainstay of the weight on this peg were conspicuous by their absence.
It was a matter of rotating lines and working at it to get the odd bite, it was so slow that Rod Wootten on peg 38 had a little nap, much to the amusement of some of the others, I must admit I was close to nodding off myself - bloody nightshifts!!
The big perch didn't show again, I managed just one, along with 3 decent skimmers, a crucian and a few roach and rudd. Although my 9lb 12oz of silvers just snuck in last in the silvers money. As predicted, the pegs in the main body of the lake dominated the overall and silvers weights, with the plastic thing chuckers catching fish from the islands.

Plantation Lakes Sunday 12th February 2012
Another short and sweet post, I arrived at Plantation and had a walk round the lake, some was frozen quite heavily, some was clear of ice completely and some had thin ice that would be troublesome, too thin to cut properly and it would float about once disturbed. Peg 1 was troubled by this and I mentioned I wouldn't fancy it.
So into the hat and out pops peg 1, I set up 3 top kits, one for th margins although I was very sceptical that I'd catch there and two for as far as I could clear the ice, 14.5m, one with a 20 on 0.10 under a small preston float whose name eludes me and another with a 22 on 0.08 under a sensas wire stemmed Auchy pencil float.
I started on bread punch, feeding half a thimble full of likky, when it became obvious that this wouldn't work I tried dripping a couple of pinkies in and fishing pinkie on the hook. I went down to 0.05 and a 26, still no bites. I tried a bit of groundbait, as I'd walked up to Faiersy and he had caught on pinkie over groundbait, although he was on peg 7.
I also set up a lead rod when the ice started to melt and had a chuck around the peg with various baits, once again nothing. Mike Owens opposite me also struggled, but he did avoid the blank, whereas on the next peg (the point) round from Mike, Rod 'venue master' Wootton was catching skimmers regularly.
Try as I might, I could not get any indication that there was a fish in the peg, so first blank for a long time.
The weights from pegs that made fishing near the centre of the lake weren't too bad, a couple of low 30's one of which was Rod Wootton with 31lb odd of skimmers, several high 20s also featured, although I didn't get the final result.
Looking forward to the series on Plantation / Acorn, we have decided to lower the entrance to £50, as many are tightening their belts in the current financial climate. Details below, if anyone is interested in fishing, contact myself or Paul Faiers.

Plantation & Acorn Lakes, Kingston Seymour, Somerset
A new series of six matches, 30 pegs,
pole only. Best 5 from 6 results to count towards the final result. Result
decided by section points and in the event of a tie, total weight.
If sold out, there will be 2 x
sections of 10 on Plantation Lake and one section of 10 on Acorn Lake. The draw
will rotate after the first and fourth matches, so you will fish Plantation
four times and Acorn twice. The first three matches are on the Match Lake at
Plantation, the last three on Horseshoe Lake. (Four of the matches at Acorn
will be on Paddock, two on the small lake).
Entry fee is £50, pools are £20
per match and the last match pools of £20 must be paid up front with the entry
fee. Payout on the day will be (with 10 per section fishing), £70 for section
winner and £50 for second in section. £50
for section silvers winner and £30 for section silvers second. There will be no
overall payout on the day. (This will obviously be amended if the numbers are less)
Payout for the Series Overall Winners will be confirmed once final number of anglers is known, all monies paid back out except peg fees.

I started on the waggler, after feeding a few micros and 3 grains of corn at 14.5m, I had a couple of roach, but they were 20 to the pound fish, so onto the Devils Spawn over the micros. That produced nothing, I didn't have a bite from the margin, on either the usual banker corn or maggot.
I ended the match with a headache from the blinding sun and 5lb of roach, pegs at the top end of the lake once again being well and truly beaten by those further down the lake.
I didn't get the weights, Tony Rixon won the match from peg 7, I think Tom Magnall was 2nd from 9. Eddie Wynne 3rd from 11. See Tonys blog for the full results and information on how to draw the right area and then catch fish!!!

I took a days annual leave to fish this match, I wasn't too convinced of the common sense of taking days off in Jan, when the wind was howling round the house at 06.30. A nice bacon & egg sandwich started the day off and that was the best bit of the windy and dismal drive to Plantation.
At the draw there was much talk of the high wind, which pegs to draw and plenty of talk about method chucking - I didn't listen, looking at some of the damage to fishes mouths, I 'm not convinced that the method and some folk who insist on striking like Zorro, aren't to blame.
I said to Glen (Faitheey) Calvert before the draw, that 33 would do me, based on previous silvers form, so I could have a days fishing. Well, I reckon, its the first time in 30 years of drawing pegs that I've ever drawn one prophesised. It hasn't got the form of last year, but the fact that 99 times from 100 you'll never beat the island chucks for carp, means you redouble the efforts to catch silvers, which can be in the peg in abundance.
So a full on silvers attack, the bait tray had 4 & 6mm Devils Spawn, caster, maggot, dead maggot and micro pellet. I set up three rigs, a 4x10 Malman Winter Wire on 0.14 to a 16 on 0.12 for the margin, a Preston diamond shaped float whose name eludes me, on 0.12 t0 a 0.10 hooklength and a 22 hook. Finally a MW Diamond, on 0.16 to 0.12 and a 16 Tubertini 808. I also assembled the ready made waggler rod, just in case the wind proved too much for the pole.
Because the wind was full on sideways, I setteled on a line at a manageable 11m, with the margins as a place to pulnder the big Perch. On the all in I fed micro and dead maggot, it wasn't long before the single maggot accounted for a snall roach, next time the float buried and on lifting into the bite, the pole came up, but several yards of orange Middy elastic came out and a 5lb carp did battle on the 0.10 hooklength. This was landed, as were the other 3 accidental 'vermin' netted during the match.
I managed to keep skimmers, roach and a couple of perch coming throughout the match, I did expect to get a few more perch, but they were conspicuous by their absence. The roach and two perch (small for this lake 10oz and 1lb) both fell to caster, as did a couple of 2-4oz roach, but the main bulk of the weight came to Devils Spawn fished at 11m, over micro and dead magot.
I was surprised myself when the fish went on the scales, whilst my silvers weren't enough to beat Mark Bromsgrove on peg1, who had 8 perch and a skimmer in the last hour for 17lb, to go with the rest of his silvers, they did tip the scales at 18.06, enought to take the silvers 2nd place coin.
Given the frosts in the week, the rumours of a mass otter kill and the forecasted weather, the weights were pretty good, with decent backups. I ended the day with 37lb odd, which was in the lower tier on the day, but as I fished for silvers it wasn't too bad at all and a nice days fishing, culminating in a payday.

Avon Angling Open, Trinity Waters, Wednesday 18th January 2011
I booked into Tony's birthday match and it was to be on Avalon, pole only, it actually ended up on Trinity's Woodlands lake, any method. Not that that was an issue, as lead chucking isn't often a framing method on this venue. A breakfast in Hilltops Cafe was, sadly, the highlight of my day and it wasn't the best brekkie I've ever had.
I fancied a draw on the far bank and managed this, but peg 15 was likely to be too high a number and so it proved, with this quarter of the lake fishing pretty tough, I assume it was the prevailing wind blowing cold water from the previous couple of nights freezes, into this corner. I set up 3 rigs and a waggler rod, one rig to fish Devils Spawn and another for maggot, finally one for the margin to fish corn or maggot.
It didn't take too long to get a bite on the 4mm Devils Spawn and then another, both of which I missed, liners? Finally I landed a decent skimmer and almost immediately, Vince Brown on my right hand side landed one as well, that was a false dawn, no more to either of us, although be both refed after our fish - a mistake?
I searched all 16m of my LH margin, right down to the pallet of peg 16 and managed one bite - a 1lb carp. The margins are usually a banker here, if they don't produce bites its because there are no fish in them. I managed a few roach on maggot and another small carp (very small) on Devils Spawn, but that was it. Vince put together some reasonable silvers and a couple of carp, on caster over groundbait, but I had, sticking to my new simplistic regime, only brought maggots, Devils Spawn micros and corn.
The best weights came from the unfancied car park bank, which had the wind off it. See Tonys blog for the results.

Viaduct Open, Wednesday 11th January 2012
When I booked into this one it was on Spring Lake, by the time Wednesday came round, there were 20 odd, so an overspill was arranged on the Match Lake. Out of the tin with my card and when opened, it revealed peg 47 on match lake. A peg with a good record of silvers weights, so I was fairly happy with the draw until I heard that it had been fished the day before and 40 or 50lb caught. Probably no big deal in the summer, but would the fish stay there after that in the winter months?
I set up a waggler to fish across, as this has proven to be a successful method for my self and others, winning the silvers in the past helped by big skimmmers on the caster. Along with that, I set up two pole rigs, to fish at 16m, I didn't try a shorter line, as I have found it difficult to catch close in in the summmer, so I imagine that in the clearer water of January, this would be even worse. I started on the pole, initially cupping a couple of casters and dead reds onto the 16m line, live, dead and pupae maggots, in varying combinations and numbers, all brought only one result, roach in the 30 to the lb class. a switch to the waggler saw no improvement, although I could see Fabio on peg 43 catching an F1 most put ins on the waggler.
The wind was pushing into my face and giving a bad surface skim around the island corner, so the waggler could'nt be fished tight to the island. sinking the line pulled it too far away and not sinking the line made the presentation very poor. Nigel Bartlett on peg 45 had an initial run of fish on the lead, but the only ready set up lead rod I had was my 12' carp rod with 8lb line - far too crude for this lake.
At 11.45 I walked back to the van and collected the loaf of bread that I'd purposely left behind and a reel to set up a light lead rod. A 20PR 36 with a long hair on 12" of 0.14 completed the set up and first put in I had a carp on the bread. I did try to catch on the waggler a couple more times through the match, but the wind, the tiny roach and the horrible glare of the sun ( you don't get that on this peg in the summmer, when the island trees and plants are in fulll leaf). I ended the day with 1.07 of silvers, the vast majority was one hybrid and 29.12 of carp and f1s.
Had I fished the bread from the off, I might have pushed the 9lb between me and the winner a little closer. Fabio kept the F1s coming for the majority of the match, for what must have been an enjoyable, all waggler caught 42.10. Second was corner peg specialist, Tony Rixon, from peg 8 on Spring.

Carps AC Open, Viaduct, 8th January 2012
As this weekend saw the start of the Landsend League and the match at Shiplate being full, I booked into this match on Campbell and Spring lakes. 25 booked in with one no show meant 12 on each lake, I am a bit of a Viaduct winter novice, so the draw wasn't a big deal to me before I pulled 130 from the coffee tin.
It was soon made apparant that 131 framed on Saturday, so my 2 pints of caster, groundbait and dead maggot suddenly seemed a waste of money - and so it proved. I set up 2 top kits with Carpa Chimps, one on 0.14 to 0.12 and a 18 Carp Maggot and the other on 0.16/0.14. I left the Matchpro quiver in the holdall and set up the ready made up 12' Maver reactorlite, with the 8lb Shimano Technium and a 0.16 hooklength and a 16 Guru QM1 hook. Last thing set up was a trusty 13' Normark Titan to fish the waggler, apart from 5 small roach, that the last mention for the real fishing equipment.
I am pretty ashamed to admit, I spent most of the day, chucking the lead........ I did it with my first chuck and landed a 6lb+ fish. I had 5 roach on the float, I threw them back......
Basically it was sit and wait for a wrap around, I was pleased that peg 131 wasn't in, as I manged to get 12 carp, chucking the lead, as far as I dare to my RH side, in line with the edge of the palllet of 131. If I went straight in front, or towards the aerator, the tip remained motionless.
Maggot resulted in tiny roach, meat only one fish and the other 11 all fell to bread, I lost a couple, one snapped the 0.16 hooklength, half way up. I assume it rubbed across the dorsal fin. The lake fished reasonably hard, the silvers weights all came from Spring and the winner came from the next peg to me, 132, the fish were obviously shoaled up at that end, although towards the end of the match they did move down into 131 as I could see the dark shadow of the shoal. This coincided with my best spell of the match.
My 12 Carp couldn't compete with the 18 for 107.09 on peg 132, so I ended up second, with 79.10. I'm not sure I agree with the way the money was paid out - 4 x 6 peg sections with the section winner and section silvers winner each getting £30. The match winner said it cost him £40 in diesel and bridge fees and I picked up nothing for 2nd. I think the money is spread out to far nowdays, it used to be when you picked up at a match on the Avon or Huntspill, it was a week or mores wages in your hand, now winning or framing hardly covers the cost of entry, fuel and bait.

Shiplate Farm, Monday 2nd January 2012
Firstly, I hope everyone had a good Xmas and a Happy New Year to anyone who actually reads my drivel. I mostly worked, apart from Xmas day, Caroline & I went to The Blue Ginger and had a great 5 course Indian Meal for our Xmas dinner, that slightly made up for not going to India this year (No, I lie, it didn't) - something to rectify this year methinks.
So back to the fishing, first match of the New Year and I booked into Avon Anglings Open at Shiplate Farm, my previous visits to this venue have seen me pick up money, with a couple of silvers wins from Westpool and a fourth overall with a section pick up also from Westpool on my last visit. Before this match I had treated myself to a new toy, a ProTie hook tyer, I ordered it the day after Boxing day and it arrived Saturday, thats prompt delivery. I tied up a few hooks with it for today and on initial impressions I'm very pleased with it. I always used to use a Delco hook tyer and since my return, I've been using the Drennan. but I have suffered a few lost fish, with missing hooks and a curly bit of line where the hook was. I'm not convinced the Drennan ties the hooks as well with modern pre stretched lines, as it did with good old Bayer Perlon. I tried a Matchman hook tyer a month or so back and have not suffered any lost hooks, hence my purchase of the Pro Tie.
Into the draw bag (or landing net as it was) and I managed to get myself a short walk, peg 2 on Hawthorn, my first time on this lake, so no preconceived ideas about what to do. Whilst not exactly a New Year resolution, I am determind to keep things simpler this year and not bring every bait and every rod/reel combo to matches, if I get it wrong, I'll have to persevere to make it work, or learn from my mistakes. So with this new mantra in my head, I set up three top kits, one with a 4x10 Carpa Chimp on 0.14 to 0.12 with a Drennan carp maggot to fish up the far shelf, a 4x14 Carpa Chimp same line, but a 16 Carp maggot to fish at full depth just short of the far shelf and a Sensas Auchy 0.4G on 0.12 to 0.10 with a 20 Drennan Carp, just in case there were any silvers about.
The bait tray was an extension of my new mantra, maggots, casters, dead maggots, a few softend micros and a few (very few) 4 & 6mm Devils Spawn. On the whistle I cupped in a few micros and dead reds at 10m, which was just short of the bottom of the far shelf and I pole potted a few maggots and casters over the shelf. I also fed a line to my left, just in front of a tree on my bank. It took a while before I got a bite and I could see the elastic coming out on peg 1, was the end peg going to hold the fish. I had a couple of fish on top of the shelf, but it was slow going. I switched to the full depth rig and a 4mm Devils Spawn over the micro's, this produced a 3lb fish and a couple of lost foul hookers. It was proving impossible to get the fish to settle and by swapping between the lines and between maggot/caster/Devils Spawn I kept the odd fish coming. With a couple of hours to go, I had a look on the inside line, the float twitched a couple of times and then slid under, but it was the smallest carp of the day, an ugly parrot mouthed fish about 1lb.
I had heard that Fabio was admitting to 25lb on the end peg (14) so I switched from potting bait in to the catapult and attacked the peg a bit more positively, feeding maggot on top of the shelf, this seemed to stir the fish into action, as I added 6 more fish in the last hour and a half and lost a couple more foulers. The fish were still sporadic during this spell, maybe two in two put ins and then nothing for 10 minutes, the water wasn't that clear that the pole should spook them, it seems as if they were backing off the feed and then coming back to it for a quick feed, then backing off again.
My 15 carp went 49.03 along with 2 chub for 1.08, giving me a lake win with 50.11. this was also enough to take second overall. The payout today was, in my opinion, the fairest way to pay out when using two or more lakes, Tony paid top three overall and top silver weight on both lakes. I've fished many matches where one lake fishes far better than the other, so making it impossible to get any thing other than a section when organisers pay overall regardless of lake. Talking of Tony, he won from the 'flyer' bush peg on Westpool - although that bush may not be there much longer........... Que my turn to draw it, the week after the bush is removed!!
Now its time to sit and watch the darts final with a glass of port and some stilton, lets hope the final lives up to last nights semi finals, real drama with Lewis coming from 5-1 down to win 6-5

I had a couple of fish on top of the shelf, but it was slow going. I switched to the full depth rig and a 4mm Devils Spawn over the micro's, this produced a 3lb fish and a couple of lost foul hookers. It was proving impossible to get the fish to settle and by swapping between the lines and between maggot/caster/Devils Spawn I kept the odd fish coming. With a couple of hours to go, I had a look on the inside line, the float twitched a couple of times and then slid under, but it was the smallest carp of the day, an ugly parrot mouthed fish about 1lb.
I had heard that Fabio was admitting to 25lb on the end peg (14) so I switched from potting bait in to the catapult and attacked the peg a bit more positively, feeding maggot on top of the shelf, this seemed to stir the fish into action, as I added 6 more fish in the last hour and a half and lost a couple more foulers. The fish were still sporadic during this spell, maybe two in two put ins and then nothing for 10 minutes, the water wasn't that clear that the pole should spook them, it seems as if they were backing off the feed and then coming back to it for a quick feed, then backing off again.
My 15 carp went 49.03 along with 2 chub for 1.08, giving me a lake win with 50.11. this was also enough to take second overall. The payout today was, in my opinion, the fairest way to pay out when using two or more lakes, Tony paid top three overall and top silver weight on both lakes. I've fished many matches where one lake fishes far better than the other, so making it impossible to get any thing other than a section when organisers pay overall regardless of lake. Talking of Tony, he won from the 'flyer' bush peg on Westpool - although that bush may not be there much longer........... Que my turn to draw it, the week after the bush is removed!!
Now its time to sit and watch the darts final with a glass of port and some stilton, lets hope the final lives up to last nights semi finals, real drama with Lewis coming from 5-1 down to win 6-5

Avalon Xmas Match, Sunday 18th December 2011
There was a good turnout for todays match, shame the cold rain/snow of a couple of days ago and the overnight frost were likely to effect the fishing. I walked up the pub last night for a beer or two, on the way I bought a lottery ticket and a loaf of bread for bait. The lottery ticket only had one number matching the winning line and I got chatting, had a couple more beers than I intended and left the bread in the pub..........
Into the draw tin and I managed to get an end peg, 48. No island chuck and I guessed the replacement loaf I bought on the way to the match, would go unused, at least the ducks would get a meal at the end. No need to load up the trolley for such a short walk, so a couple of trips to the peg saw me settled in on the nice new pallet that Vic has put in. Vic walked round and offered some advice and information on the peg, always good to get some assistance. I set up a waggler to fish maggot, a straight lead, just because it was set up in the bag (I might as well put all my lead rods on ebay for the use they get) and two pole rigs. Rig one was a 0.4g MW diamond, because the wind was blowing into my face and I wanted a stable float, this was on 0.14 with a 0.12 hooklength and a 16 6313. The othe rig was for the margin, on 0.18 with a 0.16 hooklength and a 16 B911.
I started on the waggler towards the aerator, with a 6mm pellet banded on, no feed, just to see if there was a fish willing to pick up a lone pellet. I had a search round the peg with this and then switched to single flouro maggot. The first fish fell to this, a small skimmer, I'd fed a couple of lines, off to the left between the 10 & 11 o'clock position, as far as I could catapult casters in the head wind and a pole line, which I lined up with a tree to the left of peg 2 at 14m, this was fed with micro's via a cup. I also fed the end bank at a comfortable 14.5m, this was with micro and maggot.
I had a couple of skimmers and roach, then a 6oz perch, by swapping between the waggler line and the pole line, all falling to the single flouro, soft pellet proved to be a non starter, as did caster. As I started to get a few bites, I picked up the catapult with my usual exuberance and even though I did my best to limit the bait, I think the half a dozen or so maggots was too much, as the bites tailed off. Then the waggler buried and a better fish was putting a curve into the Titan, a 3lb or so carp was duly netted. The waggler line then really dried up, so a look down to the end bank, where there was a nice flat shelf, with nearly 5' of water. No bites here, so I refed it and out onto the 14m pole line and a decent skimmer joined his small cousins in the keepnet.
Both open water lines went really quiet in the last hour or so, that left me concentrating on the end bank, hoping a couple of carp would come up onto the shelf, first put in the float buried and a 1oz roach had taken the double maggot, next put in, the float buried again, this time a small, but angry carp was the culprit, no more carp, but a couple more roach made the net before the all out.
A nice touch at the end as Vic and Mrs Vic had organised soup, crusty bread and hot mince pies, just the job after a cold day, thanks. The usual Xmas match hampers and booze was lined up and I won my section and a 12 year old Malt for my fifth place over all. My silvers went 6lb odd and the 2 carp 5lb odd for a 11.11 total, apart from the winner, it was a nice close match, a lost carp (probably fouled) cost me second place, but that was the only fish I lost.

Viaduct Xmas Match, Saturday 10th December 2011
A draw and breakfast at the Globe, in Somerton, meant an easy start to the day. Three lakes in the drawbag today and no doubt, the draw would be important, with the fish settling into their winter quarters and the overnight frost. (Down to -3°C on the van temp. gauge).
The numbers banded about before the draw as being desirable, were the usual suspects, 110, 130, 85 and the island pegs on spring, bookies wouldn't have lost much had they offered odds based on the general consensus. My ever unreliable drawing arm gave me 119, although somewhat heartend by the fact it threw up a weight on last weeks Carps match. I had tried to keep things simple on the bait tray, meat, bread, caster & maggot, with a kilo of worms in the bait bag ( that has accompanied me, unopened, for several weeks now!!). I set up a waggler and a straight lead, both to fish meat, a MW diamond to fish at 16m and a Carpa Chimp to fish caster at 13m. A margin rig joined the set up, to fish 16m down to the end bank.
I started pretty negatively, searching the peg with the waggler, lead and margin rig, without feeding, trying to find a bite, all to no avail. The 13m caster line didn't produce a single bite, to caster or maggot, even dropping down to a 22 on 0.08. By midday and still biteless, I decided to switch to fishing maggot down into the corner and across to the pallet of 120, The only place in the peg I could get a bite, was next to the sunken tree in the corner. Of course, the closer to the tree, the more likely a bite, but also more likely a lost fish. It still didn't go mad, I had 5 carp for 13.15 and 2 perch/3 roach for 2lb, a total of 15.15, this was 7th on the lake, with, as expected the weights improving towards the opposite end. 3 fish managed to escape into the tree, 2 of a similar stamp to those I landed and 1 decent fish, but they wouldn't have made a difference on the day.
Spring lake produced the goods, with Simon Jones having a great days fishing and the old favourite, peg 85 gave Dick Bull some cash and the second place hamper.

Plantation, Carps AC Wednesday, Match 7th December 2011
I reckon I must be suffering from early onset senility, I managed to book into two matches today, a few weeks back I booked into this one and last week into Tony's match on Avalon - I went with my conscience and let Tony down as I'd booked in last with him. With hindsight that was the wrong decision, as todays match cost £22, broken down as a £6 peg fee, £5 for breakfast and £1 for Carps AC. That left £10 for the pools and with 16 fishing, £50 / £ 30 breakdown for the match and silvers winners/second. I'd have rather seen the £5 breakfast money paid out on sections.
Once the breakfast was done, I'd got well wrapped up against the windy conditions and then drew peg 4 - for the last 3 months, this bank and row of pegs has been the one to draw, winning every match, today with the wind in our faces, with the occasional gust from left to right and then an equal and opposite reaction back the other way, ensured that long time form, was blown away.
I had venue expert and Plantations Booking Agent, Darren 'Noddy' Vowles on peg 5 for company, so I was expecting a lesson in plastic thing chucking and to be well beaten off the next Peg at least in the overall. The strength of the wind saw me set up a rod and plastic thing (lobotomy impending at this rate), a waggler and two topkits, although 11m was going to be the comfortable limit, due to the swirling wind. One Carpa Chimp on 0.14 to a 0.12 hooklength and a MW Diamond with the same line.
Given the choice, I'd have taken 33, its a good silvers peg and given the equal payout in this match, I fancied it for roach and perch on the caster - Colin Golding drew and I'm sure he would have fished his soft pellet over soft pellet feed approach.

saw me land 5 carp in total, on devils spawn, maggot and bread. I managed to lose 5 fish, two on the lead and three on the pole.
I'm happy that the two lead fish were fouled and so be it, but on the pole, I hooked a real big fish, it just kept swimming (no real speed), initially it came in like a skimmer, the once I'd got it close enough to break down to the topkit, it woke up. Still slow, but it swam off and kept going until the 0.12 hooklength parted. I put a new hooklength on and the next drop in hooked a fish, which took the hook and left me with a curly bit of line - I've had a couple of instances of this now, since I started using the pyroti hooktyer. That seemed to kill the poleline.
Now onto my near neighbour on peg 5, venue expert, Darren 'Noddy' Vowles, we had some good banter during the match, but this obviously affected Noddy as his lesson to me failed to materialise, in fact it was an anti-lesson as he failed to weigh in (He did claim one carp, but slipped it back on the all out whistle, so was a dismal DNW). Can't wait to have a wasted peg next to me again
I told 'Noddy' that we (me and my missus) were off to the local curryhouse on Xmas day - he fancied that, but I got a text from him saying Mrs Noddy wasn't imprressed. He also asked me to point out he holds the lake record - but surely the only peg on the stock pond doesn't count'
The real venue expert won, with all the weights coming from different pegs to those that have been dominating the last few weeks, about time those fish started moving - just a shame it was today.

Trinity Xmas match, Sunday 4th December 2011
The post title is Sunday 4th, there is a post missing for Sat 3rd, the Plantations match, on which, I drew peg 11, probably, if not definitely the least form peg on the lake, I was minded not to even bothering to walk to it, but I did eventually gather enought fortitude. I knew my gut feeling was right and 2pm packed up and went off to see the incompetent ref hand Middlesborough the game at Ashton Gate - what a shit day!!
So back to today, a long overdue visit to my favourite venue, John has been busy again and the lakes now lack much of the foliage they once possessed - I like it, but there is a balancing act to be had, between barren hole in the ground and fishable fishery. he also expressed his desire to get Wildmarsh up to a similar standard of weight averages that Woodlands achieves - I've no doubt he'll succeed.
I've previously managed a 3rd and 2nd in this match, in fact in 2006, it was my first match back after my long layoff, so a win was the aim, I felt this necessitated a draw on the far bank. Thankfuly a far bank draw, No 8, stuck to my mitt, from Misha's bucket. I had purposely left the rods at home, so set up a couple of top kits with 1g & 1.5g rigs respectively and another with a 0.8 for hard pellet. Finally a 2x10 rig for the margin, although, as much as I plumbed the margin, a decent shelf was conspicuous by it absence. The best flat area was under the platform of the vacant peg 9.
I started at 13.5m, with micros and Devils Spawn, as this is often a good bet to catch decent skimmers and carp, not today as a couple of hand sized skimmers made the net in the first half an hour or so. I was obvious looking round the lake that no one was catching well, and a switch to maggot caster brought the odd small roach and skimmer. By the time Misah stared the first of her rounds with the gratis soup, mince pies and sausage rolls, I had approx 1lb.
I looked in the margins earlier than I wanted too, and had three carp in three put ins under the pallet of peg 9, that seemed to be the residents caught as I failed to get another bite from the margin, one more carp from the 13.5m swim and another couple of roach was too be my lot, but I wasn't far away with that, as the carp had not fed, the scales swung in my favour, with 17.10 of carp and 3.02 silvers, making my 20.12 enough to win by 2oz. It was nice to win this match, with my previous 2nd and 3rd and I must congratulate and thank John, Sue and Misha on the hampers for my self, 2nd and 3rd, as well as the silvers winner.
Wine, Cheese, Beef, Pork and a variety of other goodies which won't last long.... so much for the diet!!
